“Every journey of 1 000 miles begins with a single step,” according to a Chinese proverb – and this applies as much to entrepreneurship as to any other sphere. Kim McFarland, COO of Investec Asset Management, recently told DESTINY how the firm’s founding team trundled desks and chairs from home to furnish their small premises in Cape Town.
Similarly, Lisa Lowth (37) remembers vividly her own long, challenging journey to entrepreneurial success. In fact, she says, it was only after she’d been running her business for two years that she realised her husband had been bracing for the worst.
It all started when – after years as a successful dealer principal in the retail car market – Lowth decided she was ready for a change and branched out into a completely different market: bling. For bags.
“The idea started in August 2007, when Steven and I got married in Las Vegas, USA,” recalls Lowth. She spotted the bejewelled handbag-holders on sale there, and liked what she saw, so she started saving furiously, researching the market and made contact with five manufacturers for samples. By November that year, she’d received her first 1 000 sample hangers. A month after that, she resigned from her job – and Bling 4 Bags was born. (end destiny magazine)
