(Via Mashable) Ladies, your work here is done! The whole “like it here/there” campaign has finally gone viral…. For the ladies that are confused, if you have seen your news feed on facebook being filled with statuses such as “I Like it on my desk” etc…. it’s all part of a new Internet trend that has gone viral on Facebook to raise awareness for breast cancer.

First thing’s first, though: these women are actually referring to where they like to place their purses, not to their favorite places to make love. Of course, part of the reason this trend has gone viral is due to its heavy sexual connotations.

The reason for all of these “I like it on” status updates is simple: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of women are using this meme/trend as a rallying cry to raise awareness for cancer research. The status updates naturally get their friends to ask them about their commentary, which is exactly the point of this meme/trend.

Like any social platform, Facebook is susceptible to rapidly-spreading trends. In January bra color status updates started dominating newsfeeds worldwide, again to raise awareness for breast cancer.

While we don’t know where the campaign originated from, it’s cute, fun and generating some buzz (especially useful, as the commenters point out, for getting women to go in for their medical examinations). Still, we can’t forget that this is a disease that will kill 10 million women in the next 25 years, so we also implore you to donate to breast cancer researchif you can…

The First Thing Young Women Do in the Morning: Check Facebook [STUDY]

(Via Mashable) Young women are becoming more and more dependent on social media and checking on their social networks, according to a new study released earlier today by Oxygen Media and Lightspeed Research. In fact, as many as one-third of women aged 18-34 check Facebook when they first wake up, even before they get to the bathroom.

The study sampled the habits of 1,605 adults using social media between May and June of this year in an attempt to break down their social media habits. While some of the results are in line with previous studies we’ve read, others simply shocked us (e.g. 42% of young women think posting photos of themselves “visibly intoxicated” is okay).

Here’s a short rundown of how young women are utilizing Facebook and social media in general:

Are Young Women Addicted to Facebook?

While the study covers all of social media, it’s clear that women in the 18-34 range are focused on their Facebook accounts. More than half of young women (57%) say they talk to people online more than face-to-face. A full 39% of them proclaim themselves Facebook addicts, while 34% of young women make Facebook the first thing they do when they wake up, even before brushing their teeth or going to the bathroom.

Here are some other interesting stats regarding young women and Facebook:

21% of women age 18-34 check Facebook in the middle of the night
63% use Facebook as a networking tool
42% think it’s okay to post photos of themselves intoxicated
79% are fine with kissing in photos
58% use Facebook to keep tabs on “frenemies”
50% are fine with being Facebook friends with complete strangers

What conclusions can we draw from this data? It’s not just that young women are using Facebook religiously: it’s that they’re very open with what they post and who they accept as friends. Combined, it can lead to a privacy mess.

Social Media’s Role in Dating

We already knew that Facebook has radically changed dating, and Oxygen Media’s stats only back up that assertion. 50% of women believe that it’s just fine to date people they’ve met on Facebook, compared to 65% of men. 6% of women use it to “hook up” (20% of men do the same).

It gets murkier for relationships. 49% of women believe it’s fine to keep tabs on a boyfriend by having access to his accounts (42% of men think the same way). 9% of women have broken up their relationships via Facebook, as compared to a full 24% of men.

Luckily, most women don’t believe that breaking up via Facebook is okay: 91% to be exact. I don’t want to meet the 9% who think it’s just fine.

Women and Privacy

The Oxygen Media/Lightspeed Research survey is filled with a lot of other interesting data points, but it all circles back to the privacy issue. 54% of 18-24 year old women do not trust Facebook with their private information, and 89% agree that “you should never put anything on Facebook that you don’t want your parents to see.” That seems contradictory to the 42% that think it’s fine to post pictures of themselves drunk.

Our habits are changing due to social media technology, particularly Facebook. It’s not just a connection tool for many women, but a research tool, a dating network, and a way to keep tabs on both boyfriends and enemies.

Tuesday Tips: Don’t Spend Your Whole Day Cleaning

One of the most frustrating aspects of being a Mother is how much disorder children bring into our lives. The house is strewn with toys, streaks of grape jelly decorate the walls, and the floor is sticky with who-knows-what substance. Your youngest child seems to wake up sick on every holiday and your middle kid throws tantrums in the most unexpected places embarrassing you to the core. Kiss predictability goodbye until you ship your kids off to college. Don’t let disorder drive you nuts. Instead of chasing your kids around all day picking up every block they toss onto the floor, or wiping down every sticky fingerprinted window, just relax. Does the thought of relaxing while watching tiny saboteurs rip your house to shreds evoke shudders of anxiety? Don’t let it. Here’s why you should wait until the end of the day to clean and tidy. If you do it any earlier, your house is going to get destroyed again. And again. And again. The result? Frustration and resentment towards your kids and your role as a Mother. Do this instead. Have a designated area in your house for toys. Either have your children play ONLY in that room or allow each child to select three toys to bring into the common area of the house. Right before dinnertime, put on some peppy music and make a game of cleaning up the house. Have the children put the toys back where they belong. As for messes, only clean them up immediately if they are going to cause a permanent stain. Otherwise, wait until your pre-dinner clean-up time to give the house a quick wipe-up. Why do the same thing over and over and over again and drive yourself crazy? Put one big clean-up time on your daily schedule and let yourself have fun with your kids the remainder of the day!

Tuesday Tips: Toddler Summer Snacks

A little snack idea, perfect for a summer day.

Ingredients:
Celery
Carrot
Ranch (or some other dipping sauce…hummus?)
banana

Idea:
1. Use a serrated peeler to make thin strips of carrot.

2. Chop off a cute little chunk of a piece of celery. I got rid of the top of the celery, and cut one stalk in half, since I was making this for my two oldest children.

3. Cut off a cute little slice of a banana. (this is going to be the sun) Eat the rest of the banana yourself. :0)

4. Assemble your cute little summer scene. Celery is the trunk of a palm tree. Banana is the sun.

5. Carrot slices make the top of the palm tree. Ranch to dip the carrots and celery in make a cute little beach for your tree to sit on.
